Acts of Kindness

Tommy believed that we are all responsible for caring for other sentient beings and saw everybody’s potential to have a positive impact on humanity through gestures of any size. We highlight these acts of kindness and those living by these principles here.

  • Q1 2021

Shortly after Tommy’s death, the family saw an outpouring of acts of kindness in memory of Tommy and in line with the mission of the Fund. We have learned of thousands of acts taking place all over the community and world and are happy to share a long list of deeds as inspiration for others.

  • January 2022

A year later, we would like to make acts of kindness in Tommy’s memory around the time of his birthday on January 30 an annual event. Please share your acts of kindness with #TodayforTommy and in our survey.

Luangwa, Zambia, Tommy Raskin Sewing Center

May 2021 - Tom and Mary Snitch have purchased five new sewing machines for the Damien Center to establish the Tommy Raskin Sewing Center, where village members are creating new fashion and school uniforms for their community.

Veterinary Technology, Baker College

May 2021 - Dr. Erin Howard, Medical Director for the Veterinary Technology program at Baker College, of Michigan created the Tommy Raskin Acts of Compassion Assignment. Dr. Howard devotes significant time to mental health in her courses. Her students were assigned to complete six acts of compassion each. She reminded them of Raskin family friend Kari McDonough’s words that “no act is too small- whether that’s calling an old friend, or picking up trash along Sligo Creek.” Dr. Howard’s students accepted the challenge, building kindness in their community.

Burma

April 2021 - In honor of Tommy, over 100 pounds of cooking oil, over 500 pounds of rice, baby formula, toys, and food were delivered this month to an orphanage in Burma. This effort was inspired by reading about Tommy in The Washington Post. These donations were gathered together by members of the American Embassy community and delivered two days before their evacuation. The orphanage was in great need of food and supplies due to the current political situation.
